Caterpillar Expands its Proactive Search for New Innovation
Cottonwood Technology Funds, a top performing investor in technology start-ups, is pleased to announce that Caterpillar Ventures has recently joined its investment group. Cottonwood seeks disruptive innovation at the seed/founding stages, especially emerging science in photonics, advanced materials, robotics, healthcare and energy. Caterpillar Venture is a wholly owned subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc., who is the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial turbines and diesel-electric locomotives.
“Being a global manufacturing leader, Caterpillar provides an ideal testing ground for so many of the technologies we are supporting and finding. Caterpillar is willing to be an early adopter and help the companies test their products in live applications, also then perfecting their manufacturing processes at lower volumes before they have to scale to larger markets,” said Ray Quintana, General Partner and Head of European Operations and Corporate Relationships for Cottonwood. “Combined with Caterpillar Ventures, and what we expect to be increasing support from other major corporations over time, Cottonwood is building an excellent platform for finding and supporting the most promising emerging technologies across a global marketplace.”
“While Caterpillar invests heavily in research and development within our own four walls, we’re also investing in other companies via Caterpillar Ventures and embracing new technologies that can help transform our future and theirs. Cottonwood’s ability to identify a company’s potential at an early stage – to be our eyes and ears on the ground in the startup world – helps us extend our reach. Our job is to then determine how the newfound technologies can benefit our customers,” said Michael Young, director of Caterpillar Ventures.
“We couldn’t be more honored to have someone of Caterpillar’s global reach and impact join our group of investors,” said David Blivin, Managing Director, Cottonwood Technology Funds,. “As one of the few venture investors globally willing to support these hard science ideas before they have an initial working product and customer, we consistently see that our corporate network becomes the key to crossing the chasm and enabling market entry for our portfolio companies. Caterpillar’s common vision of their ability to be a true partner in this process makes us a better partner for our portfolio in helping them achieve their vision of disruptive impact over time.”
